Ernest William Dark was born in Ballarat and a Boot Salesman by trade when he enlisted in the No 1 Australian General Hospital on 10 April 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board A62 Wandilla on 25 June 1915. On May 18th he sailed from Fremantle on the Mooltan, bound for the battlefields Europe. In March 1916 he arrived in France, where he transferred to the 6th Field Ambulance with whom he served through the war. He returned to Australia as a member of the nursing staff on the Marathon, disembarking on June 7th 1919.
