Born in Ballarat, David Randall Maddern was a single 21 year old clerk at the time of his enlistment on the 10th of April 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board the HMAT A31 Ajana on the 4th of June 1915.
On the 16th of August 1916 he was promoted to Sergeant.
David returned to Australia on the 12th of April 1917, but was discharged on the 31st of January 1918.
