Biography

Clarence William Smith was born in Ballarat and was a Boot Clocker by trade when he enlisted in the 7th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 12 April 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 17 June 1915 and joined the 7th Battalion on Gallipoli as a reinforcement in December, just two weeks before the evacuation was completed. In January 1917 he transferred to the 59th Battalion in France but in June he was evacuated due to illness. He was returned to Australia for discharge due to ædefective vision'.
