James Owen Thomas was born in Ballarat and was a Bootmaker by trade when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, C Company on 15 April 1915 at the age of 33. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 10 May 1915. Soon after arrival in Egypt, illness was diagnosed that necessitated his return to Australia. He returned on the Wiltshire and was discharged on October 22nd 1915 as æmedically unfit'.
