Biography

Charles William Johnson (SN 1011), born at Ballarat, was a 21 year old painter when he enlisted in Ballarat on April 19th 1915. He sailed from Melbourne on the Euripides on May 10th and served for a short time at Gallipoli with the 23rd Infantry Battalion. He moved onto France in late March 1916 but in June he was evacuated to hospital in England suffering from bronchial pneumonia. He returned to France in June 1917 and in September was transferred to the 10th Company Australian Army Service Corps. A recurrence of pneumonia saw him back in England in November, unable to rejoin his unit in France until March 1918. After the war he returned on the Kanowna, disembarking at Melbourne on October 23rd 1919. He was discharged on December 30th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Charles W. Johnston.
