John Stanley Telling was born in Hay, NSW, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted from Ballarat with the 5th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement on 19 April 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes. He was admitted to the 3rd Field Ambulance for influenza on 13 November 1915 before being attached to the Divisional HQ. ON 19 March 1916 he embarked for Australia aboard the Demosthenes on duty as 'escort', disembarking at Melbourne on 19 April 1916. He received a medical discharge on 31 May 1916.
