George Samuel Edward (SN 99) born in Ballarat, was a 25 year old labourer when he enlisted on August 18th 1914. He joined the 8th Battalion and embarked for active service on the Benalla on October 19th. On April 25th 1915 he was at the Gallipoli landing, then two weeks later he was involved in the carnage that was the second battle of Krithia, south of Anzac. In October he was evacuated to hospital on Lemnos, suffering from jaundice. After the Gallipoli evacuation he was based for a time in Egypt where he suffered sunstroke and was seriously ill for several days. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 60th Battalion with whom he moved to France. On July 19th 1916 he was wounded in action during the ill-fated battle of Fromelles. He suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder and was evacuated to hospital in England. He rejoined his unit in January 1917 but in June, illness once more forced him to hospital in England. After his discharge from hospital he was attached to the 15th Training Battalion as Company Sergeant Major (CSM). In February 1918 he was able to rejoin the 60th Battalion in France. After the war he returned home on the Port Sydney, disembarking at Melbourne on December 2nd 1918 and was discharged on 31 January 1919.

His brother Alexander also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
