Biography

Leslie Lewis Thomas (SN 2446) was born in Ballarat and attended Redan State School. He was a 19 year old, Woollen mill employee at Sunnyside Mill when he enlisted on May 3rd 1915. Originally allocated to the 7th Infantry Battalion he was then transferred to the 59th and finally on March 23rd 1916 to the 58th Battalion whilst stationed in Egypt. He arrived in France on June 23rd 1916. In October he was accidently injured and was invalided to England to recover for several months, rejoining his unit in France in February 1917. On 25th September 1917 he was killed in action at Polygon Wood, near Ypres, and is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium.

His brother Gomer also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
