Biography

Frank Davies (SN 79) born at Merino near Hamilton, was a 21 year old motor mechanic when he enlisted in Melbourne on March 24th 1915. He embarked for overseas service on May 8th and sailed to Egypt before joining the 24th Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli in late August. He was wounded in action, shell shock, in December, in some of the last action of the Gallipoli campaign. Back in Egypt he was transferred to the Camel Corps, but his service was marked by some discipline breaches and declining health, particularly tonsilitis, dental caries, influenza and cardiac problems. He was returned to Australia aboard the Willochra, disembarked at Melbourne on Anzac Day 1917 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, irritable heart', on June 6th.
