Biography

John Joseph Haniford Williams (SN 511), Ballarat born, attended the Macarthur Street State School before moving to Tasmania. He was 25, a labourer, when he enlisted at Pontville, Tasmania on August 20th 1914. He joined the 12th infantry Battalion and embarked from Hobart in October aboard the Geelong, destined for Gallipoli. He suffered a severe head wound in late April and died of his wounds aboard the hospital ship Mashobra on May 1st 1915. He was buried at sea, but is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
