Biography

Ernest Davey (SN 100) was a Ballarat born butcher when he enlisted on August 18th 1914. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion, he left Australia in October aboard the Benalla and took part in the second wave of the famous Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915. On May 8th he was wounded in action and that shrapnel wound, followed by illness, caused his evacuation to the island of Lemnos and then on to hospital in England. While recovering in England he twice was charged with discipline breaches, once for drunkenness and once for assaulting a military police officer. He rejoined his unit in Egypt in March 1916 then embarked for France a few days later. In July 1916 he was wounded for a second time suffering a shrapnel wound to his left arm and was again evacuated to hospital in England. Once recovered he returned to the battlefield in September. In October 1917 he was wounded for a third time, suffering a wound to his wrist. It was then decided he should be returned to Australia. He returned on the Borda and was discharged on May 30th 1918.

His brothers Frederick and Roland also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
