Biography

James Thomas Morton (SN 2000) was born in Ballarat and attended the Mt Pleasant State School. He enlisted on May 24th 1915, having previously served for two years in the navy. He was 18 years old, single and a labourer. He joined the 22nd Infantry Battalion, sailed from Melbourne in late August and served at Gallipoli for the last six weeks of that campaign. He reached France in August 1916 but on May 3rd 1917, at only 20 years of age, he was killed during the fighting at Bullecourt. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
