Biography

Francis Edward Arthur Duggan (SN 2502) born in Melbourne, was a 19 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 18th 1915. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Demosthenes on July 16th. During the voyage he was charged with using obscene language to an NCO. He saw action at Gallipoli until illness forced his evacuation to Gibraltar in October 1915. Once recovered he moved to France in March 1916 but in July he suffered wounds to both legs and was evacuated to England. He rejoined his unit in France in April 1917. He avoided further wounds but did experience health problems that led to his return to Australia aboard the Persic. He reached Melbourne on February 12th 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, cardiac neurosis’.
