James Lucas (SN 2643) born in Creswick, was a 21 year old labourer when he enlisted at Ballarat on May 27th 1915. Assigned to the 6th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Demosthenes on July 16th , first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli for the final two months of that campaign. Back in Egypt he was transferred briefly to the 58th Battalion then to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade. He reached France in June 1916 and in October 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder. On January 10th 1919 he married Catherine Kerr at Rothesay in Scotland. He returned to Australia aboard the Demosthenes, disembarked at Melbourne on September 14th 1919 and was discharged on November 13th. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number W18492.
