Andrew Ward (SN 123) born in England, was a 27 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 18th 1914. He had previously had five years military experience in England. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Benalla on October 19th and sailed to Egypt. He served through the Gallipoli campaign until illness forced his evacuation in the final weeks. He rejoined his unit in Egypt in early 1916 but he was deemed unfit to go on to France. He returned to Australia aboard the Port Sydney, disembarked at Melbourne on July 22nd 1916 and was discharged on October 8th.
