Wilfred Graham Salmon (SN 6413/ Lt.) was born in Ballarat East and was a 20 year old, unmarried, farm manager at the time he enlisted on July 12th 1915. He embarked from Melbourne on board Wiltshire in November and joined the 4th Field Artillery Brigade in England. In March 1917 he was discharged from the AIF to allow him to take up a commission with the Royal Flying Corps. He was based in Dartford, Kent with the 63rd Training Squadron, when he engaged in attacking a daylight raid over London by 22 German Gotha bombers. He received a head wound and attempted to return to Joyce Green Airfield but unfortunately lost control and crashed resulting in his death on July 7th 1917, aged just 22. He was buried at Watling Street Cemetery, Dartford, Kent, England, UK.
His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
