Biography

Allan Robert Whiteley (SN 1149) was born in Ballarat and was a 20 year old dairyman when he enlisted on June 9th 1915. He embarked aboard the Kyarra on August 20th and served with the 8th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli for the last month of that campaign, before being evacuated suffering from influenza. His health problems continued in Egypt until he was returned to Australia aboard the Borda and discharged in October 1916 as ‘medically unfit, pyelonephritis’. He immediately applied for and was accepted as a driver in the Home Service Transport Unit, a position he held until discharged on March 24th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Robert A. Whitely.
