Born in Warrenheip, VIC , larbourer by trade, Joseph Kinnane enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 18 August 1914. He received a gunshot wound to the though on 30 April 1915 and was released back to duty as fit on 24 June. He was wounded again on 5 August 1915 with a shrapnel wound. On 20 April 1918 he received another gunshot wound to the arm and thigh and was transferred to Cambridge Hospital in England.
He received his final discharge on 18 July 1918 with a fractured radius.
