Biography

Charles Frederick Morris (SN 2629) born in Melbourne, was a 24 year old railway employee when he enlisted in Melbourne on June 9th 1915. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Makarini on September 15th and reached Gallipoli for the final couple of weeks of that campaign. Back in Egypt he was transferred to the 60th Battalion and moved to France in late June 1916. On July 19th his unit took part in the tragic charge at Fromelles in which he sustained a gunshot wound to his left buttock. He was evacuated to England destined not to return to the battlefield. In December 1918 he departed England aboard the Leicestershire, disembarked at Melbourne on January 22nd 1919 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, wounded’ on March 16th.
