Biography

James Edward Sullivan (SN 1174) was born at Minyip and was a 27 year old labourer when he enlisted at Seymour on March 25th 1915. Assigned to the 21st Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Demosthenes on July 16th reaching Egypt in mid-August. While in Egypt he was twice charged with being absent without leave and spent a period in detention. In March 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion for service in France. In May 1917 he was wounded in action when he sustained a slight shrapnel wound to the chest which still required evacuation to hospital in England. Once recovered he returned to France where on July 24th 1918 he was again wounded, gassed, and once again evacuated. He was then returned to Australia aboard the Bakara and disembarked at Melbourne on February 14th 1919. He was discharged on April 8th 1919.
