Biography

William Harold Webb (SN 2274), born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old butcher when he enlisted at Ballarat on March 24th 1915. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Wandilla on June 17th and sailed to Egypt. He was transferred to the 60th then 58th Battalions before the 14th Field Artillery Brigade with whom he served in France from June 1916. He avoided combat wounds, but his service record is dotted with discipline breaches, the worst of which was a charge of desertion after he absented himself in the field near Amiens in October 1918. This resulted in a sentence of imprisonment which was commuted as of the date of his embarkation from England. He was returned home on the Devon, disembarked at Melbourne on November 27th 1919 and was discharged on March 8th 1920.
