Cyril Bryant, a Ballarat-born Motor Trimmer by trade, enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 18 August 1914. His tour was plagued by illness, starting with a case of dysentery and synovitis of the knee, resulting in extensive in-and-out out hospitalization. On 1 October 1915 his records simply show him admitted as 'dangerously ill', spending nearly a month in Malta before being released as 'out of danger'. He finally received a medical discharge due to enteric fever and chronic gastritis on 24 June 1916.
