William Henry Thurling (SN 2700) had attended the Humffray Street State School and was an 18 year old labourer in Ballarat East when he enlisted in Melbourne on June 15th 1915. He joined the 5th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne aboard the Makarini in September, reaching Gallipoli for the last week of that campaign. He then moved to France at the end of March 1916 but on July 25th 1916 he was killed at Pozieres. He has no known grave, and his name is on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
