Biography

Charles Thomas Hill (SN 1945) was born in Percydale but was educated at the Sebastopol State School. When he enlisted on June 16th 1915 he was 31 years old, unmarried and a miner. He was posted to the 23rd Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in late August. He reached Gallipoli in October and was wounded shortly before the evacuation. Once recovered he moved to France in late March 1916. He was killed in action on July 28th 1916 during the fighting at Pozieres. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Thomas C. Hill.
