Biography

William Brown (SN 2558) born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old timber worker when he enlisted at Ballarat on June 17th 1915. He embarked aboard the Makarini on September 10th to serve with the 5th Infantry Battalion. He reached Gallipoli for the final weeks of that campaign. Back in Egypt he was transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion for service in France, which he reached in April 1916. In May 1918 he was found guilty of stealing four bottles of spirits from civilian premises. He returned to Australia aboard the City of Poona, disembarked at Melbourne on May 14th 1919 and was discharged on July 6th.
