Biography

John Alfred Davis (SN 1915) born in Ballarat, was a 24 year old butcher when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 18th 1915. He embarked on August 26th aboard the Anchises to serve with the 21st Infantry Battalion. He reached Gallipoli in October and saw out the final two months of that campaign before being moved to France in March 1916. In February 1917 he suffered shrapnel wounds to his face and eyes that caused his evacuation to England then his return to Australia. He was discharged on November 2nd 1917 ‘medically unfit, defective vision’. He also enlisted to serve during World War 2.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Alfred J. Davis.
