John Gardner, a Geelong-born Labourer, enlisted in the 8th Infantry battalion on 18 August 1914. On 30 May 1915, in Gallipoli, he received a gunshot wound to the arm and was transferred to Hospital in Malta. On 8 October 1915 he was transferred to England and later received a medial discharge.
Private Gardner's service record notes nothing other than the fact he was an exemplary soldier.
