John James McBane Gardner (SN 188) born in Geelong, was a married 21 year old labourer when he enlisted in Geelong on August 18th 1914. He embarked aboard the Benalla on October 19th destined to be part of the historic Gallipoli landing with the 8th Infantry Battalion. He was wounded in action in June 1915, suffering a gunshot wound to the arm. He was evacuated to Malta and then on to England. He was then returned to Australia aboard the Suevic, and was discharged medically unfit on March 30th 1916. He re-enlisted in late 1918 but the end of the war meant his services we not needed .
