John Matthew Walsh was born in Ballarat and was a Station Hand living in Wentworth, NSW when he enlisted in the 24th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on 21 June 1915 at the age of 33. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 26 August 1915. He spent much of 1916 in and out of hospital due to illness. On August 24th 1918 he was wounded in action, suffering a gunshot wound to his left forearm. He was evacuated first to England and then home to Australia On January 28th 1918 he was discharged æmedically unfit - wounded'.
