Illfred Stafford Mortimer Hume (SN 4218) born at Brim in the Wimmera, was a 20 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 12th 1915. Assigned to the 15th Field Company Engineers he embarked aboard the Demosthenes on December 29th and sailed to Egypt. In June 1916 he moved to France, transferred to the 8th Field Company Engineers. He was fortunate to serve through the war avoiding serious illness or injury and returned home aboard the Wyreema. He disembarked at Melbourne on May 31st 1919 and was discharged on July 25th.
