Biography

Frederick Ernest Hillman (SN 1010) was born in Ballarat where he was educated at the Dana Street State School and the School of Mines. He enlisted in Ballarat on April 19th 1915. He was 20 years old, unmarried and a blacksmith. He was posted to the 23rd Infantry Battalion and embarked in May on board the Euripides. From late August he served at Gallipoli until the December evacuation. He reached France in late March and on June 19th 1916 he was killed during the fighting at Armentieres. He was buried at Desplanque Farm Cemetery, France, aged 21.
