Biography

Henry William Walshe (SN 4326) born in Ballarat, was a 23 year old salesman when he enlisted on July 12th 1915. Attached to the 14th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne on December 29th . After some further training in Egypt, he moved on to France in June 1916. On August 8th 1916 he was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital in England where he was diagnosed as suffering from shell shock. It was decided that he should be returned to Australia, and he disembarked from the Karoola at Melbourne on April 10th 1917. He was discharged as ‘medically unfit’ on June 2nd 1917

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as William H. Walsh.
