Biography

John Hopetoun Stanley Thomas was born in Ballarat and was a Draughtsman by trade when he enlisted in the 31st Battalion, D Company on 5 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 9 November 1915. He was serving with the 31st Battalion when in December 1916 he became ill and was hospitalised in France before being transferred to England. It was found that he was suffering from severe pleurisy and he was returned to Australia aboard the Barambah and discharged as æmedically unfit' on July 30th 1917.
