Albert Hayes of Ballarat, VIC, enlisted in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment on 11 September 1914. Whilst on duty at the Show Grounds Camp on the 14th October 1914 Private Hayes suffered a slight concussion and injury to his spine through his horse falling and rolling over him. The fracture resulted in paralysis of the arms and lower limbs. On 29 may 1916 the medical board stated that "this soldier is permanently incurable and totally incapacitated from following any employment." Private Hayes received a medical discharge with pension.
