Walter Matheson Wilberforce (SN 3950) born at Coolgardie WA, was an 18 year old surveying student when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 9th 1915. He embarked for overseas service aboard the Ceramic on November 23rd. On arrival in Egypt he was allotted to the 46th Infantry Battalion with whom he moved to France in June 1916. Twice during 1917 he was wounded in action. The second of these was a severe shrapnel wound to his left hand that forced his evacuation to England then his return to Australia. He disembarked from the Field Marshall on May 22nd 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on November 9th .
