Biography

John Joseph Kelleher (SN 3167) was born at Cork in Ireland and was a 24 year old sample man when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 6th 1915. He embarked on September 29th and sailed to Egypt to join the 5th Infantry Battalion. He then moved on to France where he suffered a minor wound in August 1916 before being evacuated to England in November suffering from trench feet. After treatment he returned to France but in November 1917 he was diagnosed as suffering from epilepsy. He was returned to Australia aboard the Port Darwin and was discharged as ‘medically unfit’ on April 8th 1918.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as John J. Kellegher.
