William Ernest Lewis Morgan was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 13th Light Horse Regiment, 7th Reinforcement on 7 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. In Egypt in March 1916 he was attached to the 2nd Division Ammunition Column and moved to France where he served as a driver. In December 1917 he was withdrawn from the line for a few days suffering from frost bite to his left ear. He came through the war without significant physical injury and returned to Australia on the Runic, reaching Melbourne on April 10th 1919.
