Biography

Percy Leonard Ellsworth (SN 1791) was born in Sebastopol and was a Farmer by trade when he enlisted in the 9th Light Horse Regiment, 13th Reinforcement on 7 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 11 January 1916. He served in Egypt and Palestine, predominantly with the 9th then 8th Light Horse Regiments. In August 1917 he qualified as a signaller. Shortly after the war, in December 1918, while in Tripoli he was charged with giving a false name to Military Police' and forfeited 10 day's pay as a consequence. He returned to Australia and was discharged on October 26th 1919.

His brother George also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his surname as Elsworth.
