Biography

Clarence Rupert Roberts (SN 289) was Ballarat-born and attended the Pleasant Street State School. He was a 20 year old architectural draughtsman when he enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on August 18th 1914. He embarked from Melbourne in October on board the Benalla with the first ANZAC fleet and landed at Gallipoli in May 1915. During the August Offensive he sustained a severe gunshot wound to his foot and was evacuated to hospital on Malta. On August 13th 1915, he died of septicaemia at the Valetta Military Hospital and was buried at the Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
