Ernest Alexander (Alex) Trahar (SN 9750) born at Ballarat, was a 19 year old student when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 12th 1915. He embarked aboard the Wiltshire on March 7th 1916 and sailed to Egypt before moving on to France in June, where he served with the 13th Field Ambulance. As the northern winter set in he was increasingly troubled by bronchitis and was evacuated to England where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He returned to Australia aboard the Karoola, disembarked on April 10th 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on May 30th. He re-enlisted for Home Service on May 13th 1918 and served with the Base Records Corps in Melbourne until he was discharged on January 31st 1919.

His brother Charles also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Alexander E. Trahar.
