Biography

James George Hannah (SN3771) was born in Dean and attended the Wattle Flat State School. He was a unmarried 33 year old labourer when he enlisted on August 7th 1915. He joined the 46th infantry Battalion and left Australia in November and undertook further training in Egypt and arrived in France in June 1916. He was badly wounded in August at Pozieres and was evacuated to England. He did not return to France until February 1917. He was killed in action at Messines, Belgium, on June 7th 1917, has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

His brother Samuel also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Samuel was killed in action the day after James.
