On March 7th 1916 he embarked aboard the Wiltshire and sailed to Egypt, then on to France in June to serve with the 58th Infantry Battalion. At Fromelles on July 19th he suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and was evacuated to hospital in England. Once recovered, he was able to rejoin his unit in France in February 1917.
