Biography

Robert Taylor (SN 293) born in Ballarat, was a 25 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 18th 1914. On October 19th he embarked aboard the Benalla bound for Egypt, attached to the 8th Infantry Battalion. He was wounded at the historic Gallipoli landing of April 25th 1915, suffering a gunshot wound to his knee. He was evacuated to hospital at Malta and then to Egypt. In early 1916 he was moved to England for a hernia operation. Health problems persisted and it also seems he married while in England. He was discharged medically unfit, while still in England, on January 4th 1918.
