Robert Taylor, a Ballarat-born labourer by trade, enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 18 August 1914. He was admitted to Hospital for tonsillitis on 02 April 1915 and again on 04 May 1915 due to a gunshot wound to the knee, discharged to duty a month later. He received a medial discharge as of 4 January 1918 and returned to Ballarat.
