Leo Rostron, a Ballarat-born Clerk, enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 18 August 1914 as a private. On or about the 12th of May 1915, Rostron received a gunshot wound to the back, resulting in hospitalization. He was discharged to duty and later received his first promotion to corporal as of 9 march 1916. However, the wound he had suffered caused trouble with his spine (possibly a spinal concussion), eventually resulting in a medical discharge as of 16 February 1916.
