Biography

Stanley Irving Stephens was born in Melbourne, Victoria, was single and a Sheet Metal Worker when he enlisted with the 8th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement on 8 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in May and to Corporal in July. By August 1917 he was promoted to Sergeant. On 21 may 1918 he was wounded in action in the field having suffered a gas attack and was evacuated to the War Hospital in Guildford. He returned to Australia aboard the Saxon from England on 11 December 1918.
