Stanley Irving Stephens (SN 4891), born in Melbourne, was a 23 year old sheet metal worker when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 12th 1915. Allocated to the 5th Pioneer Battalion he embarked aboard the Wiltshire on March 7th and sailed to Egypt. He reached France in June 1916, and in October was transferred to the 1st Army Forest Control with whom he served until July 1917 when he returned to the 5th Pioneer Battalion. He was wounded in action, gassed, on May 21st 1918 and evacuated to hospital in England. On December 11th he left England to return to Australia aboard the H T Saxon and was discharged on March 16th 1919. He also enlisted for service in World War 2.
