Biography

Calvin Ellis Briant (SN 3239) was born at Maryborough and was an 18 year old motor mechanic when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 8th 1915. He embarked for active service three months later aboard the Nestor and on arrival in Egypt he was assigned to the 58th Infantry Battalion. He reached France on June 23rd 1916 and four weeks later his battalion took part in the disastrous charge at Fromelles. Initially he was reported as wounded in action, but it was later confirmed that he had become a prisoner of war on July 20th 1916. Most of his interment was at Friedricksfeld in Germany until in April 1918 he was transferred to Holland. Just a week after the signing of the Armistice he arrived in England. On March 5th 1919 he embarked from England aboard the Nevasa reaching Melbourne on April 28th and was discharged on August 19th 1919.
