Biography

Joseph Leslie Calvert (SN 3260) was born in Ballarat where he was a 25 year old miner when he enlisted on July 8th 1915 On October 11th he embarked to serve with the 6th Infantry Battalion aboard the Nester. Upon reaching Egypt he was transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion and was deployed to France in late June 1916. In January 1917 he developed an ulcerated foot and was evacuated to hospital in England suffering from trench feet. While in England he contracted an illness that required him to spend 72 days at Bulford Hospital before he was deemed unfit for further active service. He left England aboard the Berrima on October 31st 1917, reached Melbourne on December 30th and was discharged as ‘medically unfit, phthisis’ on February 4th 1918.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Leslie J. Calvert.
