Biography

Robert Arthur Wade (SN 4325) was born in Bungaree but grew up in Bond street, Mt. Pleasant. He was a 22 year old bricklayer when he enlisted on July 15th 1915. He trained at Ballarat, Williamstown and Broadmeadows before embarking from Melbourne on the Demosthenes on December 29th as a reinforcement for the 14th Battalion. En route to Egypt, while taking part in a wheelbarrow race, he experienced sudden, intense chest pain. Consequently, he was admitted to hospital on arrival at Cairo on February 3rd 1916, where cardiac illness was diagnosed. He was assessed as unfit for active service and on March 30th he sailed from Suez on the Argyllshire to return to Australia. He was discharged on July 25th 1916 "medically unfit – heart trouble". He is remembered on the honour board of the Mt. Pleasant State School.
