Albert Swingler (SN 5666), born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old body maker when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 30th 1915. He trained at Ballarat and Castlemaine before departing Melbourne in January 1916 aboard the Runic as a reinforcement for the 2nd Field Company Engineers. Once in Egypt he was transferred to the 12th Field Company Engineers but was then hospitalised with a hernia. In June 1916 he was moved to France but in August tonsilitis and neurasthenia required his evacuation to England where he also experienced reoccurrence of the hernia. It was decided that he should be returned to Australia, and he left England on the Runic in early May 1917. He reached Melbourne in July and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on September 4th 1917.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Albert Shingler.
One of a number of soldiers with multiple entries in the original register, he is also recognised at Tree 1638.
