Herbert Murray McIntyre was born in Melbourne and was living in Ballarat as a Carpenter by trade when he enlisted in the 5th Field Company Engineers on 9 July 1915 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 24 November 1915 and sailed via Alexandria to France where he disembarked in late March 1916. His service record indicates that aside from a couple of minor illnesses and absent without leave charges, he served through the war without significant incident. He returned to Australia on the Derbyshire, reaching Melbourne on April 22nd 1919.
