Thomas Robert Hughes, a Ballarat-born Labourer, enlisted in the 8th Infantry battalion on 18 August 1914 at the age of 19. He fought against bouts of pneumonia, receiving hospitalization in June 1915. As a result he was given a medial discharge on 11 April 1916 and returned to Australia.
